Card Photomosaics

It came to me in a dream… literally.

Nearing the end of my freshman year at college, I had a vivid dream of a collage utilizing cut-up Magic: the Gathering cards as the medium, rather than the traditional photos that are utilized in photomosaics. After spending a month or so mulling over the idea I decided to pursue it, spending the greater part of two months designing and planning a 2,500-image mosaic (modeled after the Birds of Paradise Magic card.) Images were hand-picked by myself (not via a machine or algorithm), allowing for intricate details such as the Bird’s eye or the erupting volcano to be matched with precision. The mosaic was also built on a grid system, allowing the approximately 6’x8’ mosaic to be taken apart and reassembled- it now is prominently on display at Dice City Games, a local game store in Wheaton, MD whom I consulted for at launch.

Lightning Bolt Mosaic

A year after building the Birds of Paradise mosaic, I began working on a much smaller, second piece. This one was of a very different card, Lightning Bolt. This piece now also hangs at Dice City Games, as a permanent art installation.
